Amanda Johnson, a young graduate from the University of Wisconsin, worked at Hull House

as a settlement worker. In 1895 Jane Addams, who at that time was garbage inspector for the

nineteenth ward, appointed Amanda as her deputy. Together the two of them would begin

their day at six in the morning and follow the garbage wagons to the dump, arrest slum

landlords and complain to City Hall. They became famous for their attack on garbage and

disease in the ward.

 

At the age of seventy-two Amanda shares her memories of working with Jane Addams,

the “saint of Chicago,” the ups and downs of running Hull House and their fight against

prejudice and poverty in Chicago.
