The 980 DP 1.2 Video Generator / Analyzer module supports video, audio and protocol functional testing high-end DP 1.2 displays and optionally sources. The module supports HBR2 data rates including 1.63, 2.70 & 5.40 Gbps on 1, 2 & 4 lanes on both its Tx ports and its Rx port. The module features two DisplayPort 1.2 outputs—both active simultaneously—for testing displays with multiple DisplayPort inputs. The 980 DP 1.2 Video Generator module is equipped with all the standard video timings and test patterns necessary for testing modern displays. The module supports reading and verifying the EDID and DPCD registers of a display and now supports emulation of an Multi-Stream Transport (MST) source supporting up to three (3) downstream nodes. You can control the link training through a user friendly interface which enables you to force link training with user specified settings. The Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) utility enables you to view the link training transactions, EDID and HDCP exhcanges as well as the MST sideband messages.

The DP 1.2 module’s optional Rx analyzer port emulates a DisplayPort 1.2 display device including EDID and DPCD emulation, Rx Link Training function and MST Rx function. The Basic analyzer option enables you to view the real time video, main link video parameters and the secondary data packets. A second analyzer option enables you to capture and store the incoming DisplayPort stream from a source for detailed analysis of the main stream and secondary data elements.

The 980 DP 1.2 Video Generator module can be equipped in the following Quantum Data 980 Advanced Test Platforms:

  • 980B – 5-slot, 15″ touch display
  • 980R – 5-slot, rack-mountable with 7″ touch display

The 980 DP1.2 Video Generator module is equipped with all the standard video timings and test patterns for testing high end displays including tests for protocols such as HDCP and EDID.

You can configure the list of video format timings and test patterns using the Format List Editor and Image List Editor. This facilitates convenient and quick access during testing. The module provides a Format Editor for creating custom format timings or for quickly making modifications to existing timings for testing.

The 980 DP1.2 Video Generator module offers a variety of features for testing DisplayPort protocols. You can control the module’s link training parameters through the user friendly 980 GUI Manager. You can set the limits on the lane count and link rate and allow the link training engine to establish link training based on those limitations or you can force link training parameters—lane count, link rate, voltage swing, pre-emphasis.

The EDID Decode feature enables you to examine the contents of the EDID of the connected display in human readable text. The DPCD Decode feature enables you to examine the DPCD registers of the connected display in human readable text.

The optional Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) application enables you to monitor the DisplayPort Aux Channel for link training and HDCP transactions as well as EDID exchanges between the module and a connected display. You can monitor in real time through the 980B’s embedded touch display and save files for later viewing or for sharing with colleagues at other locations.

The 980 DP1.2 Video Generator module can be controlled either through the PC-based 980 GUI Manager or through the embedded 980 GUI Manager running on the 980B itself. The 980B’s built-in color touch screen provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to control the instrument and to view incoming video and metadata in the Real Time mode when using the module’s optional analyzer feature available in subsequent releases.

The following are a list of features and benefits for the DisplayPort 1.2 Video Generator module. Refer to the Options tab for information on optional features.

Video Pattern Testing – Test a DisplayPort 1.2 display’s inputs with over 600 standard formats to ensure that it can render video test patterns including. Over 300 video patterns supported. Create your own custom formats using the user friendly Format Editor. Scroll bitmap patterns to test for motion artifacts. Create custom test pattern lists and custom format lists to facilitate testing.

Protocol Testing – The 980 DP1.2 Video Generator / Analyzer module offers a variety of features for testing DisplayPort protocols. The module’s EDID Decode feature enables you to examine the EDID of the connected display in human readable text. The DPCD Decode feature enables you to examine the DPCD registers of the connected display in human readable text.

Link Training Configuration Utility – The link training control features enables you to configure the module’s link training parameters during testing. You can set limits on the lane count and link rate and allow the link training engine to establish link training based on those limitations or you can force link training parameters—lane count, link rate, voltage swing, pre-emphasis.

HDCP Testing – Verify a downstream DisplayPort 1.2 display’s response to HDCP 1.3 authentication. View status of authentication and exchange of registers.

Multi-Stream Transport Testing – Emulate an MST source for testing an MST branch device or MST-capable monitor. Up to four (4) streams are supported depending on bandwidth (resolutions) with a depth of one. You can configure the MST topology using a graphical interface. Users can read the EDID and DPCD registers of specific downstream MST display nodes. The optional Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) utility depicts the MST negotiations with the connected MST sink device.

The following is a list of options for the DisplayPort 1.2 Video Generator module.

Basic Analyzer option – Enables you to view the incoming video, number of lanes, link rate, timing colorimetry and various other metadata in real time at a glance. This feature provides a basic confidence test to verify that the incoming video is essentially correct. The Basic Analyzer also enables you to emulate any EDID on the Rx port to test a source devices handling of various EDIDs. You can also configure DPCD registers for emulating on the DP Rx port. The Basic Analyzer option also enables you to emulate a DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) branch device and MST sink nodes. The emulation capability includes the ability to present EDIDs from downstream MST sink devices and to provide a response to DPCD reads.

Protocol Analyzer option – Requires the Basic Analyzer option. It enables you capture the main link attributes and diagnose interoperability issues related to them. The Protocol Analyzer captures and stores main link data and provides visibility into main stream attributes, secondary data elements, K-Characters and protocol errors. The Protocol Analyzer presents these elements on a graphical timeline and in a table. You can select any transaction in the table and view its details. The capture utility also enables you to capture specific MST streams from the source.

DisplayPort Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) option – The optional Auxiliary Channel Analyzer (ACA) utility supports monitoring of hot plug events, EDID exchanges, HDCP authentication, DPCD register reads, link training transactions and MST negotiations between a DP source and the DP module’s Rx port. The ACA logs these events and assigns precise timestamps to them. Once captured you can view the details of each transaction. The ACA enables you to pinpoint various failures on the DisplayPort link. These ACA can be saved and disseminated for further analysis by colleagues and other subject matter experts.
